http://www.explore.co.uk always looked interesting but I haven’t been on one of their holidays (brochures in the bottom drawer, will go to Latin America one day !!!)
Have fun !!
I can tell you my experience with one company, but as I have not tried the others mentioned in other answers, I can not compare them.
I went with Exodus, http://www.exodus.co.uk, last year on a bike trip to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, and I think they were good. They have a lot of trips to choose from, all over the world.
The group size was not too big, and the trip was well organized. As you are a teacher I should mention that of the 10 persons in my group, 3 were teachers!
We travelled with a group (I think the group sizes are normally maximum 16 persons on their adventure trips). They have also started offering some of their trips as “independent holiday”, for small private groups (http://www.exodus.co.uk/independentholid… if you don’t want to travel with a bigger group.
Exodus used only local guides on the trip, and they were from all three countries. Using local guides support the local ecconomy in developing countries, which I think is good, and the guides also knew a lot about their countries.
I have heard that Explore (http://www.explore.co.uk) and Exodus offer similar trips and are equally good, but I have not tried Explore myself.
A nice page with a lot of information about the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu and Peru in general (bookings can not be made there, I think) is http://www.andeantravelweb.com/peru/inde… Since the number of trek permits to the Inca Trail is limited to 500 per day (about 200 tourists and 300 trekking staff) it is important to book well in advance (see Inca Trail Availability 2007 – http://www.andeantravelweb.com/peru/trek… However, if you join a group trip, they will probably have arranged this for you.
Before you go for a tour or a travel you need to plan something. Visit online website to know
more about the place the people, hotels, their cost and get a brief idea about the place. Try to be prepare before hand also get some
knowledge about the laws and rules of that place.
