South African adventure paddlers make history
Four South Africans have become the first adventure paddlers to navigate some of the world’s most secret rivers in the jungles of the far east.
Cape Town adventure kayaker Andrew Kellett was flown east by the Indonesian government to navigate the rivers of the remote Solok Selatan region of West Sumatra, and spent 14 days exploring more than 100km.
With him were fellow South Africans Hugh du Preez, Celliers Kruger of Fluid Kayaks and Capetonian Adrian Tregoning, along with four Indonesian paddlers.
“This beautiful region is characterised by volcanic geology – including an active volcano – and dense rain forest,” Kellett reported. “The team managed six first descents, including the first descent of the Tangsi Empat, a double waterfall around 18m high.
