Expat Looking For A New Adventure. What Countries Do You Recommend For Long Term Travel? And Why?

I enjoy spend 3 month to a year in a country and getting to know the culture. I am an American woman traveling alone (age 49). I’ll be looking for a new country and new adventure next year. I thought I post this and see what ideas come from the Yahoo Answers community.

Try the PHILIPPINES with 7,107 islands to choose from, with diverse culture and with lots beautiful sceneries that merged in an archipelago.
Try to search for these places in the Philippines:
    1. Ifugao
    2. Bohol island
    3. Palawan island
    4. Cebu island
    5. iLocos Norte
    6. Boracay island
    7. Albay
    8. iLocos Sur
    9. Batanes Group of island
    10. Davao

I did a 3 week trip to India once and was blown away, the culture is so very different from European, I’d love to go back but I wouldn’t want to go on my own (last time I did it with a male Indian friend which made me feel very safe, I don’t think I’d want to try it as a female on my own)
we also did a month’s tour of New Zealand which was wonderful, the culture is not so vastly different from here in the UK, but it’s just such a young open country with loads and loads of beautiful scenery and so much space (UK is so crowded!!)
we also went on a cruise in the Baltic and I thought St Petersburg was going to be the highlight, but for some reason I felt totally alienated there … however Helsinki in Finland and Tallinn in Estonia were wonderful, lovely people so that might be another idea for you

A good idea might be to use the Philippines as home base, since it’s cheap, people are very friendly and helpful, and most people speak English. You can see Boracay, Palawan, Sagada, Siargao, Cebu, Bohol, and Baguio. There are places for bargain shopping, there are a lot of nice handicrafts, really cheap good pearls, and also high end shopping areas. There’s also a pretty wide range of places to stay in terms of prices.
From here, you can visit Macau (2 hours away), Hong Kong (1.5hrs away), Mainland China, Thailand (3-4hours away), and Singapore (3-4 hours away). It could be your own amazing race =)
